The Vestibular Autorotation Test: What It Is & How It Can Help You!

At the Neurological Institute of Los Angeles, we offer a variety of neurodiagnostic testing options for our patients! One of these tests is the Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT).

The Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT) is a non-invasive test which assesses the vestibular function of the brain. You might be thinking to yourself, “Vestibular function? What’s that?”. In simple terms, the vestibular function of the brain is responsible for managing your spatial positioning and balance.

The VAT includes ocular, positional and caloric portions, all of which are examined by the patient’s high-frequency head and eye movements. Abnormalities indicated in the results act as a diagnostic investigative tool for underlying conditions, including vertigo, imbalance, unsteadiness, recurrent falls, etc.

The entire test takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, and is completely painless! Patients with neck injuries may not be authorized to take this exam. Speak to your physician, or give us a call, to determine if this test is right for you.
